Where Light meets Rose & the result = a visual feast

The Goal: to capture the essence, minus the perfume, and of course, the thorns!

What I want, what I’m looking for: beauty, harmony

What I don’t want: boring, fuss, fiddle

The Model: Only the best = David Austin/Olde World Roses fresh, from my garden

The Technique: first I take the Golden Mean/ratio,( also known as “Phi” or the Fibonacci Sequence) and sacred arithmetic as my base structure. 

Then painting from life, with limited palette, using a combination of the 3 primaries, I block in the structure from dark to light

I then attack with direct paint application, and deliberate placement of colour, and value.

I stop, I look, I squint, I dance…I step back….many times, I’m like an athlete, with a paint brush!

I then apply the finishing passages with intentional bravura(think Sargent) and finally subtle suggested form.

Mansfield Park

An original oil on board, gesso framed, by hand, by Master Framer Paul Craig. Paul and I go way back. It was Paul who framed all four of the paintings I was commissioned to paint for the LOTR, and Hobbit Trilogies.

These beautiful, and richly scented roses, are unique in their presentation, and form. They are painted in a more abstract version of classical realism, in a modified technique I learned from the master Dennis Perrin.

The outside dimensions of the complete frame are 13” x 14.5”

The inner dimensions of the actual painting itself are 9.5” x 11”
